Frequently Asked Questions

a. Are there always symptoms for STDs? Some STD’s will have symptoms and some will not. Sometimes you may miss the symptoms as the symptoms can disappear without you ever noticing it. However, if you experience discharge from the penis or vagina, sores or itching on the genitals, get tested. Worst, there are also non symptomatic types which may spread to your partners.

b. Can I test myself? No, STD testing must be done by your health care provider.

c. Is there more than one type of STD test and how is it tested? Series of questions will be asked to determine the type of STD you might be infected with. The method of testing is usually by blood and urine but sometimes swabs and cell samples can be used to test the infection. The diagnosis can be made in the office but may take several days when the blood or urine samples are sent to the lab. Usual turn around time for the result is between 3-5 days.
